Writers Block -- Throw It Out!

My new strategy for dealing with writers block is to throw it out and start over! Writers all have that moment of reading something they wrote and hating it. This scene from Mike & Molly resonates with me. Been there, done that!

One of my first books, The Boy Next Door, was a story I loved...until I received edits. Let's just say the edits felt like a personal attack and I didn't see any way to save the story. So I printed it out and set it on fire in the driveway. Damn was that ever therapeutic! Thankfully The Boy Next Door did survive edits and get published, thanks to my friend and coauthor, TK Winters, but it was a painful process.

I learned a valuable lesson about backing up my work when my computer crashed and I lost an entire chapter of a work in progress, Have a Little Faith In Me. Rewriting the chapter was frustrating but a blessing in disguise because the new version turned out to be a vast improvement.

This happened again recently while writing Ice Queen, part of the Naughty Literati's upcoming release, Naughty Getaways. I liked the characters and premise but was struggling to write the story. I'd worked on it intermittently for a month and only had 4,500 words. So I stopped writing, read what I had and found myself bored. Gah! Finally, I set it aside, opened a blank Word document, and started over with the same characters but at a different point in their story.

Since I'd been bored with what I wrote, I decided the story needed to start in a big way. I put the characters in the middle of having sex at work on the company owner's desk. BHAM!

Tossing out the old version and starting over vitalized my writing and brought my muse out to play. The words flowed like a raging river. I ended up writing 14,555 words in only six was nights, the fastest I've ever written a story. This is really impressive when the fastest I'd previously written had been 23,000 words in 3 weeks on Trip My Switch.

Hence my new motto was born--Throw It Out!

Here's a snippet of what I wrote--140 words that really got things rolling.

Ice Queen - new adult, stepbrother romance

Blurb:
In school, he was the bad boy this good girl couldn’t have. At work, he’s the boss, I’m his intern. Oh, and his dad just married my mom. It’s so wrong. We shouldn’t be doing this, but I love it.

Snippet:
“Oh God. Right there. Yesss.”

The loud smack of flesh on flesh registers before the sting reverberates through my right ass cheek, followed quickly by a wave of heat. The slap amps up my arousal and has a fresh gush of juices spilling from my pussy onto the already damp desk blotter.

It’s so wrong. We shouldn’t be doing this, but I love it. Every decadent second of forbidden…

Hell, I don’t even know what to call it. Kyler Harrington isn’t my boyfriend. We aren’t dating or in any kind of relationship. He’s a complete asshole and I don’t even like him. I wouldn’t even call him a fuck buddy. I’m the intern who he just happens to fuck. Yet I thrill in the rebellious act of fucking him right under his father’s nose while on the clock at work.

Naughty Getaways will be available for your reading enjoyment June 1st.

Happy reading,
Nicole

Read an Excerpt:

She talked as if they were living together, and he liked that a lot. Maybe he should bring the topic up again. When he was in town, they practically lived at her place. The last time he brought it up, they agreed to wait. His job, her studies, all was not the best environment for a steady relationship. But everyone had challenging schedules and busy lives.

“Great. Come have breakfast. Do you want to eat there or on the bed?” he asked.

When she looked up, he noticed the glitter of tears in her eyes. “The bed is fine.” She got up and put the album down.

“Hey, hey, what’s wrong?” He placed the tray of food on the end of the bed and pulled her into his arms.

“I’m okay. Just looking at these old pictures got me thinking.”

He smoothed her short, dark hair out of her eyes. Without the long blond wig, she had more of a pixie face and less of a seductress face, but he liked both sides of her. He kissed her, but she returned the kiss with less enthusiasm. Something bothered her. “Thinking about what?”

“I love this house. But if I sell it, my financial problems would ease a bit. It may take years before I could afford another home. I do want a home. I have so many memories here. It would be hard to leave it.”

“Then don’t sell it,” he said. “You’re doing okay. This side job pays well, and we’re discreet. Oliver sets up the clients and prescreens them, which makes it even safer. I can always move in to help out. It’s more than that Paula. I want to be with you. I want a home that we share together. It’s hard, I know, when I’m away. When I’m in town, I want us to be together.”

“I thought you needed space.”

“Not true. My regular job requires a lot of travel, and I was afraid it would strain a relationship, so I avoided getting serious with anyone.”

“I know, but…” She hesitated.

“Tell me.”

She looked up at him. “I’m worried about what this job at Dark Odyssey is doing to us. What if we end up liking it too much? We’ve not had much sex alone since we started. I’m worried that sex will become just a job, an act. Each assignment is hot and fun and we’re making great money, but at what expense if we lose something between us, what we have together?”

In My World ... Aliens Glow

Every story requires the author build a world for their characters, whether its a real place or one that's a figment of their overactive imagination. World building, when done right, is behind the scenes magic that becomes part of the background leaving the characters and story in the foreground. Basically, there but not really seen.

I view world building much like the magic of Disney World. Visitors see the attractions, well manicured landscaping, shops and restaurants. They see the world Disney wants them to see. And just out of sight are a network of hidden walkways and buildings where employees, who remain out of sight, support and maintain the created world.

More often than not my stories take place in real places yet I still create their world in subtle ways from the decor of their homes to the places where they work. For my story Alien Rights, part of the Naughty Heatwave boxed-set available June 1st, I built everything. From the diner where Emily works to the stasis chamber on the astrocruiser Neimus where she meets Ralosian commander Kalgron Rodar.

For me, alien environments are a lot more fun as I get to invent things only known to my imagination. An exo-med unit, for example, is a computerized device that can scan someone, detect any anomalies in their genes and repair the problem within minutes. Now that's a device we could sorely use in healthcare, although it would put me out of my "day" job as a CT Scan Technologist.

In addition to the world, I created a race of beings, the Ralosians from the planet Ralos. Since Ralosians are not of Earth they had to be different but still potentially attractive to us. I made the Ralosians large with skin that glows, along with glowing eyes that have elongated pupils similar to an animals.

Of course, since I am also an artist, I had to create an image of Emily's alien hero. Here he is, the dark yet glowing Ralosian Commander, Kalgron Rodar.

Cover Reveal - Tripped Up

Woohoo! Here it is folks, the cover for Tripped Up, the final book in the SEALs on Fire series, coming soon from The Wild Rose Press. We don't have a release date yet but it will be soon, possibly before the end of the month. :D

Tripped Up
Written with my partner in crime Allie Standifer

Karen James accepts and enjoys her generous curves but still lacks confidence when it comes to the opposite sex. She's perfectly capable of flirting with the pumped up, fake cover models she works with. But real men, like the handsome SEAL her best friend tasked her with babysitting, put her on shaky ground. He ramps up her snarky attitude and keeps her body humming with a constant arousal that won't be sated.

Garrett "Trip" Trippington is the easiest going, most laid back, steady member of Team Arapahoe. Nothing ruffles his feathers or causes him to falter; not even being shot while on a mission. All that changes the moment he first sees Karen, a curvy vision of feminine perfection with a razor-sharp tongue. He's tripped up, falling hard, and experiencing feelings that make his head spin. For the first time, his duties as a SEAL seem an easier mission.

Tripped Up - Coming Soon!

Yes, I know it's been a long time. 2012 was not very good to me, coupled with major life changes and a cross-country move at the start of 2013, there wasn't much room for writing. Well now that things are more settled, I am back at work with co-author Allie Standifer and we have a new contract from The Wild Rose Press for Tripped Up, a standalone book in the SEALs On Fire series. Woot!
Release date to be determined.

While perfectly capable of flirting with the pumped up cover models she often worked with, real men like those of SEAL team Arapahoe put her on shaky ground. Especially Trip, the SEAL she’s been tasked with babysitting during the upcoming wedding. He ramps up her snarky attitude and keeps her body humming with a constant arousal that won’t be sated.

He’s tripped up, falling hard, experiencing feelings that make his head spin, on foreign ground and engaged in the most important fight of his life.
