Chapter One

Bells tinkled a merry greeting as the door of the Moonlight Diner swung open. Emily Baxter finished refilling the last salt shaker and glanced at the clock. Ten minutes until closing time and a new customer shows up. Great, she’d have to work late again.

Story of my freakin’ life.

With his brown hair sticking up in all different directions, white shirt buttoned haphazardly and one pant leg partially tucked into a sock, the man who’d walked in had a wild gleam in his glassy eyes. He had the lean, athletic body of a runner and when cleaned up was probably rather attractive.

“Aliens!” He pointed toward the back of the diner. “I was abducted!”

Okay, cleaned up and dried out, she amended.

Hank’s bald head appeared in the pass-through. “Aliens? Hey, did you get probed?”

“How’d you know?” The customer stumbled as he made his way toward the counter and dropped down onto a stool with a sharp hiss. “Did Calgon get you too?”

She glanced back at Hank, owner of the diner and her boss. One corner of his mouth drew upward into an evil grin Emily knew well. She’d been a victim of Hank’s bullying and her heart went out to the customer who thought he’d found a sympathetic listener.

“Calgon the alien took you away, huh?” Hank sputtered, barely getting the words out. “You’ve been watching too much TV, dude. Hey, Em. Better call the guys with the white coats. He needs a padded cell and one of those jackets with the really long sleeves.”

While Hank laughed and cracked jokes at the man’s expense, Emily set a cup of coffee in front of the customer and patted his arm. “Ignore Hank. Everyone else does.”

The second she went through the swinging door into the kitchen, Hank grabbed her arm and dragged her over to the grill, where he kept a close eye on the man who sat hunched over the steaming mug.

“That guy’s a total crackpot, Em. Don’t get close to him. Might rub off on you.”

“Insanity isn’t catching.” Jerking free of his hold, she punched Hank’s beefy tattooed arm. “But stupidity is,” she mumbled under her breath.

She understood Hank’s bully mentality—how making other people feel small gave him the false sense of being a big man. Still, understanding didn’t make dealing with him any easier. “You are such an ass! That man is obviously down on his luck and could use a little compassion.”

“Compassion?” Hank gave her a slack-jawed stare. “You’re crazier than he is.”
Emily sighed and shook her head. She preferred to believe everyone had some goodness in them, but Hank had proven himself rotten to the core, lacking any depth or virtue. A true lost cause.

The grill had been shut down and cleaned for the night but there was still a pot of soup simmering. She filled a bowl, put a couple of rolls on a plate and headed for the door, not surprised when Hank moved to block her path.

“That bum didn’t order anything and sure as hell won’t have the money to pay.”

“I’m not sending him back out on the street without a meal.” She couldn’t afford to lose her job but would make a stand on the issue if necessary.

“Okay, Sister Teresa, but you’re not giving my profits away.”

Emily shook her head. “You mean Mother Teresa, moron, and I’ll pay for the meal.”

Hank’s brow furrowed with confusion and disbelief shone in his dark eyes. “Must be paying you too much if you’ve got money to throw away on bums.”

Grinding her back teeth, Emily battled the urge to throw the soup in Hank’s cruel face. “The way you treat people is going to come back and bite you in the ass, Hank. It’s called karma. Because I’m kind and help others in need, one day when I’m down low, someone will offer me a hand.”

Hank’s riotous laughter had her hoping she’d be around to witness the day karma tore him a new one. Why did she continue to try to get through that thick skull of his? He would never see acts of kindness as anything other than signs of weakness. And having shown that weakness would make her a prime target for Hank’s brutality in the days to come.

So be it.

“Grow up, Hank. You’re not in grade school anymore.”

Emily not only fed the man, she listened to his tale about the aliens and their high-tech spacecraft. She mentally went over her mounting bills and declining budget as he detailed the aliens probing his rectum. She gave him bus fare to get home before showing him out and locking up the diner.

Her own commute was brief—out the back way and up a rickety flight of stairs to her rented room above the diner.

Stepping into the alley, Emily gazed up at the stars. As a child she’d dreamed of blasting away on the space shuttle to visit distant mysterious places. Her customer had insisted there were other forms of life out there, and as crazy as it may seem, she agreed. Considering all the planets in existence, so many more than humans were aware of, surely some of them were inhabited. To believe Earth harbored the only intelligent life would be rather arrogant and naïve.

The whole idea of being abducted and taken away in a spaceship actually sounded pretty damn good to Emily. No more working her fingers to the bone or fending off idiots like Hank. She’d travel to exotic locations and settle down when she found a culture where women were not only cherished but treated with respect as equals.

While the night sky was full of beautiful stars, one in particular captured Emily’s attention. It shined a bit brighter than the others, twinkled faster and appeared closer.

With the customer’s story still fresh in her mind, Emily held out her arms, reached toward the beacon of light and yelled, “Calgon, take me away!”

Between one heartbeat and the next, darkness shut out the stars, her body became weightless and rose into the air, and she drifted off into nothingness.

Ex-EC Titles Re-Released: Part One #notchilled

The publisher Ellora’s Cave has been having problems for the last couple of years. They’ve had massive layoffs, late and missed payments to authors and contractors, then, when they sued a blogger for defamation, all hell broke loose. There was mudslinging and accusations and a boycott of Ellora’s Cave books led by some pretty powerful people in the field of romance. EC authors themselves begged their fans not to buy their EC books so they could request reversion of rights based on low sales.

Positive actions you can take to support authors still trapped in the EC quagmire. Let’s get some love for your favorite EC author!
— Buy non-EC books by your favorite EC author!
— Write a review for a non-EC book by your favorite EC author!
— Blog or post on social media about non-EC books by your favorite EC author!
— Recommend non-EC books by your favorite EC author to all your reader friends!

Several of us have had rights reverted on titles previously published by Ellora’s Cave. I want readers to know about these titles, that they can buy them and recommend them without remorse. Below is Part One of what I hope is a continuing series of titles formerly published by Ellora’s Cave and re-released by the authors after rights reversion. This list includes a mix of romance sub-genres. Note: if a title has changed or an author name has changed upon re-release, the original title and author name are included for reference.

In My World ... Aliens Glow

Every story requires the author build a world for their characters, whether its a real place or one that's a figment of their overactive imagination. World building, when done right, is behind the scenes magic that becomes part of the background leaving the characters and story in the foreground. Basically, there but not really seen.

I view world building much like the magic of Disney World. Visitors see the attractions, well manicured landscaping, shops and restaurants. They see the world Disney wants them to see. And just out of sight are a network of hidden walkways and buildings where employees, who remain out of sight, support and maintain the created world.

More often than not my stories take place in real places yet I still create their world in subtle ways from the decor of their homes to the places where they work. For my story Alien Rights, part of the Naughty Heatwave boxed-set available June 1st, I built everything. From the diner where Emily works to the stasis chamber on the astrocruiser Neimus where she meets Ralosian commander Kalgron Rodar.

For me, alien environments are a lot more fun as I get to invent things only known to my imagination. An exo-med unit, for example, is a computerized device that can scan someone, detect any anomalies in their genes and repair the problem within minutes. Now that's a device we could sorely use in healthcare, although it would put me out of my "day" job as a CT Scan Technologist.

In addition to the world, I created a race of beings, the Ralosians from the planet Ralos. Since Ralosians are not of Earth they had to be different but still potentially attractive to us. I made the Ralosians large with skin that glows, along with glowing eyes that have elongated pupils similar to an animals.

Of course, since I am also an artist, I had to create an image of Emily's alien hero. Here he is, the dark yet glowing Ralosian Commander, Kalgron Rodar.

Lisa wanted to laugh as she listened to a group of women seated at a large table ordering fancy drinks with sexy names. Foreplay, All Night Long and Kinky Orgasm were a few of her favorites.

Shan found two empty stools at the bar for them. After several minutes, they were approached by a harried-looking bartender, flamboyant mannerisms and a gay pride T-shirt advertising his sexual preferences.

“What’ll it be, ladies?”

“A Slow Comfortable Screw with a twist,” her sister stated.

His attention turned toward Lisa. “What would you like, hon?”

Her mind wandered to the earlier visions of frantic sex with Michael, and her devilish muse became inspired. What the hell, he’d asked what she wanted, and he was blatantly gay so there was no danger of his thinking he could provide what she desired. She might as well tell him in explicit detail.

“I want a hard, deep, raw fuck against the wall, with multiple screaming orgasms, followed by the inability to walk straight for days.” She flashed him a wicked grin.

The bartender breathed heavily and Shan moaned. “Dayum, sis. Umm…I changed my mind. I’ll have what she’s having.”

“You and me both, sugar. I’ll let you know when I find someone capable of filling that order. In the meantime, you’ll have to choose something contained on the shelves.”

Lisa relented, ordered a glass of merlot, and turned to take in the room. The brief verbal play lessened some of the tension and allowed her to relax, if only slightly.

The band sounded hot, and quite a few members of the audience were dancing. Everyone appeared to be having fun. She received flirtatious glances from several men, but she didn’t offer any encouragement. Whether a simple case of nerves created the gut reaction or an actual case of intuition, she had the sense of sitting on the precipice of a life-altering event. Something big would happen tonight and she felt almost certain it would be tied in to the memories.

Shan and she were both asked to dance by several men and her sister took several up on their invitations. Lisa felt too strung out to dance, and politely declined all advances. Her thoughts shifted to performing.

She planned to sing tunes from now grown-up teeny-bop pop artist Christina Aguilera. Her album, Back to Basics, featured old-school style jazz, blues and soulful songs with a modern flair, along with a few sexually charged tracks that were perfect for the occasion.

Lisa would start with Save Me from Myself, a sultry, soul-inspired song that fit the forties feel she hoped to achieve and yet was still contemporary. The band had insisted she have an encore song prepared and told her in no uncertain terms that if the audience didn’t demand another number, the musicians would.

To make them happy, she decided on Candyman. The dirty and playful song would liven up the mood and get everyone interested in dancing again, hopefully saving her from singing anything else. While she enjoyed singing, she was self-conscious about doing so on stage under the bright spotlights.

At a signal from the bandleader, she headed backstage. She’d have ten minutes to prepare before being called out on stage. She paced the confines of a small dressing room going over the lyrics in her mind until the bar manager knocked and peeked in the door.

“You ready, Lisa?”

Taking note of the state she’d worked herself into, Sam moved to her side. “Whoa, honey. It’ll be all right.” Clasping her shaky hands in his own, he rubbed some warmth into her cold flesh and talked her through some calming breaths.

“I heard you sing earlier. You’re going to wow them, Lisa. Hell, if it makes you feel any better, there’s no way I’d let you on my stage if you sucked.”

As he’d intended, she laughed. “Jeez. Thanks, Sam. I’m not sure if that’s a compliment or not, but I’ll take it.”

“You’re gonna knock ’em dead, honey.” He brushed a friendly kiss over her cheek. After walking with her to the edge of the curtain, he nodded to the band. They finished the current song and the bandleader drew the patrons’ attention.

“Ladies and gentlemen, Top Hat and Old Town Tavern are proud to announce that author and vocalist extraordinaire Elisa Wilde has humbly agreed to honor us all with a song tonight. So please, put your hands together and give a big welcome to this phenomenal lady.”

Oh crap, no he didn’t. How the heck would she live up to the effusive introduction? Her tummy flip-flopped as Sam walked her out onto the now darkened stage, held her waist, and set her atop the piano. A sense of déjà vu hit her as he handed her a cordless microphone then squeezed her hand.

“Have fun!”

In a flash, she was thrust back into the memory of Edie singing on a nearly identical stage. Grateful for the vision, she followed the other woman’s example and lay on her side.

Then something truly magical occurred. Upon opening herself to the magic, Lisa felt Edie’s spirit take over and she melded with the other woman. After a series of sensual moans and a sexy hiss, she sang the first verse. The pianist accompanied her for the second. A spotlight came on, illuminating her silhouette. With the third verse, the vibrating strum of a guitar joined in. The brass section chimed in with the fourth and the lights rose slow and steady along with the music.

As she gazed out over the audience, their rapt attention boosting her confidence, her eyes landed on a man who stood apart from the crowd.

Oh God. It was him. He was real. The man who called to her in ways no other ever had. She’d wanted him for what seemed like forever, loved him her entire life, but nervous jitters assaulted her from actually being near him.

Her pulse elevated, blood roared in her head, and her body zoomed from zero to hot-and-ready in the space between one heartbeat and the next. And she had no doubt this glorious man would be exceedingly capable of filling the order she’d jokingly placed earlier at the bar.

Tall and lean.

Dark and handsome.

Captivating blue eyes.

Mine!
